OK, so there’s a ton of hype surrounding Daft Punk right now, as well as no end of
clamor about the superstars out there touring, but what about all those cool bands
over the years who nobody has heard of? Those poor souls have to rely on word of
mouth instead of multi-million dollar advertising budgets. Not only that, but what
about those poor millionaires who may well enjoy massive success, but for some
reason have never received proper recognition for their writing? There are probably
some ultra-famous folks you don’t even realize wrote their own monster hits. Or not,
as the case may be…Let’s take a stroll past five of the most underrated rock stars
who really should be wealthier, famouser or at least better respected for their
brains, and hope they don’t call us nasty names as we walk by.

1. Wax

Maryland rapper Wax is an under-appreciated white kid who weaves super-rapid tales
of woe and addiction set in a world of fact-meets-fiction. Wax, a Cuban/Irish
hybrid, real name Michael Jones, has enjoyed a deserved meteoric rise to the heights
of underground adulation. With hip-hop genius oozing from every pore, Wax is one of
those rare specimens; the actual YouTube success story. He made it on talent alone
by uploading YouTube vids of himself rapping and playing music. Not only is Wax a
sublime wordsmith, he is an *actual* musician. Howza bout that?

2. The Van Allen Belt

One of my favorite bands of the moment, but sadly under-exposed, the Van Allen Belt
are sensational. A vivid splash of semi-underground psych-pop of the “not quite
1966, but not quite 1965 either” variety, AKA the best, is evident in much of their
work. Female vocalist Tamar Kamin brings a big sound to the table, and this is more
than met halfway by the collective musical efforts of B.K. Ferris, Tom Altes and
Scott Taylor, the other three in the band. Check
out their “Meal Ticket to Purgatory” album here, and listen live!

3. The Rolling Stones

Bear with me on this. Yeah, I know, they have the tagline “The Greatest Rock ‘n’
Roll Band in The World” and are as famous as the Beatles, but one thing people
overlook about the Stones, and especially Jagger and Richards, is that they wrote a
lot of freakin’ classic choonz! Without getting all Kanye on y’all, it seems
everyone wants to talk about how awesome Lennon-McCartney were, but Mick and Keith
came up with some of the best songs of all time! It seems people forget that gems
such as “Satisfaction”, “Jumping Jack Flash”, “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Get Off
My Cloud”, plus many, many more. Their clownishness and general lunacy make it very
easy to forget that those guys were songwriters. But they were. So next time you
hear the cynical genius of “Mother’s Little Helper” remember – it was written by
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. You can find Rolling
Stones 50 and Counting tickets and info at Ticket Liquidator now.

4. David Byrne and Talking Heads

David Byrne and his merry band were one of the greatest artsy indie bands of all
time, but most people only remember two of their hit songs (“Once in a Lifetime” and
“Road to Nowhere”). Talking Heads recorded eight studio and two live albums between
1977 and 1988, each of which contained numerous modern classics. David Byrne, Chris
Frantz, Tina Weymouth and Jerry Harrison represent one of pop music’s most diverse
musical sounds, with their jagged blend of psych-funk, new wave, electronica and
world music. The release of the live video from which Stop Making Sense came
was probably their crowning achievement. In the film, David Byrne wears a
ridiculously oversized suit, and he and the band rip through an energetic set while
dancing nonstop in front of a lively audience. There aren’t many bands around who
could have pulled it off. Talking Heads remain one of the artsiest yet robust bands
ever to come out of the USA. No question about that.

5. Social Distortion

Social Distortion are one of the true driving guitar bands of modern rock. Why they
aren’t 50 times more famous than Green Day I’ll never know. The California quartet’s
blend of Stooges, Stones and Sex Pistols combines a message, a method and a madness.
Songs like “Don’t Drag Me Down” from their 1996 album White Light, White Heat,
White Trash superbly demonstrate guitarist Dennis Danell’s blinding grasp of
real rock ‘n’ roll. Sadly, that album was to be Danell’s last for the band; he died
aged 38, taking a significant fraction of the band’s talent and appeal with him. The
follow-up album to White Light, White Heat, White Trash was 2004′s Sex,
Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll, with guitar replacement Jonny Wickersham doing an
admiral job filling the shoes of the mercurial Danell. Social Distortion’s habit of
taking long breaks between albums meant their next album Hard Times and Nursery
Rhymes wasn’t released until 2011. Hard Times was awash with feelings and
concepts, and the same forceful storytelling prevailed throughout. This album alone
should have outsold dozens that appeared on the albums chart ahead of it. Social
Distortion are the band you wished you’d formed back when you were a young man with
big ideas, spunk and endless magic lyrics.

These guys are just a few of those that people need to recognize and appreciate more
(especially the poor deprived Rolling Stones). It’s not all about Beliebing the
Taylor Swiftboat agenda, folks…

Some of the beautiful people that stopped by the lounge included Whitney Port, clothing designer and author of “True Whit” as well as Jesse Metcalfe, known for his steamy roles in Desperate Housewives and Dallas.

People like you and I gamble so there’s nothing strange about celebrities who gamble because they too are human. When celebrities gamble, they invariably go to the top casinos or in the relative privacy of online gambling casino sites. Like most people, celebrities found newcasinosonline.co a good reference site. I prefer to bet on March Madness.

Celebrities who habitually gamble have favorite games in which they excel. Some are very good poker players while others play the slots better. One good example of a celebrity slot fan is Golfer John Daly who routinely plays the slot machines at $5,000 per spin, and confessed that he lost more than $50 million in 15 years of gambling. The losses included $1.5 million in 2005 right after he won $750,000 at the 2005 WGC-American Express tournament. He admitted that he managed to pay his gambling debts through sponsorship opportunities and a lot of paid public appearances.

Charles Barkley made the NBA All-Star list eleven times in his basketball career. He should make an all-star list of celebrity gamblers if one would ever be made. He’s a regular in the roulette tables in Las Vegas casinos, and the highlight of his gambling career is when he lost $2.5 million playing blackjack over six hours. He estimates his gambling career losses at $10 million. Recalling his involvement in several controversies in the NBA, he was sued by Wynn Las Vegas Casino over a $400,000 unpaid gambling casino debt.

Not to be outdone, Michael Jordan had his own big moment in gambling when he allegedly lost $1 million in one golf game. This earned him the notoriety of being considered as one bad celebrity gambler, quite a departure from being one of the best basketball players ever.

Ben Affleck, an accomplished poker player, was taught the finer points of the game by professional players Annie Due and Amir Vahedi. He has entered several tournaments, has won the 2004 California State Poker Championship and even qualified for the 2004 World Poker Tour final tournament. It would appear that he not only made good in his acting career but in gambling also.

For a time, Gladys Knight was so hooked up with gambling that she would even get out of her bed and play at a casino at 2:00 a.m. She would lose $45,000 a night in the baccarat table and, in her own words, the pit bosses and dealers was her family. She spent money that she should not be spending, and was in debt as a result.

Gambling by celebrities is a problem or merely a pastime, and a social event. It’s not clear whether they go to upscale casinos where they are provided with star privacy or whether they do their gambling in the anonymity of online casinos like the 888 casino.

Television pays the big bucks, we ALL know that. I can hope and dream all day that I win it big over at www.partycasino.com, but I don’t put too much faith in that. So who takes home the biggest paycheck? According to
Forbes’ Highest Paid TV actor list, Charlie Sheen gives up his number one earnings of $40 million last year and gets replaced by Ashton Kutcher not
only with his job on Two and a Half Men but also on the earnings list.

Congratulations Mr. Kutcher. So who rounds out the top ten?

Well check out the remaining list below:

2. Hugh Laurie: Even though Laurie’s House hit on Fox ended in May, the guy
earned a whopping $18 million.

3. Ray Romano: Mr. Romano also earned $18 million with a small screen return to television on TNT’s Men of a Certain Age, which is no longer in existence. Make sense? Not so much. You must also remember that Romano makes BIG BUCKS with his reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond.

4. Alec Baldwin: 30 Rock. $15 million. Need I say more?

5. Mark Harmon: Harmon also made $15 million over the last year and he earned that with his work on NCIS.

6. Rolling in at number six is Tim Allen: Can you believe that??!!! He made his return to television and is making some good money, coming in at $14 million.

7. John Cryer: Another Two and a Half Men star makes the list…not so surprising, really. Mr. Cryer raked in a big $13 million.

8. Patrick Dempsey: Grey’s Anatomy’s fans won’t find it hard to believe that Dr. McSteamy or McDreamy(?) made the highest earnings list coming in at $12 million.

9. Jason Segel: $8 million for his work on How I Met Your Mother!

10. Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki both raked in $8 million.

According to Forbes magazine, Dr. Dre is THE highest paid musician of 2012 and the guy hasn’t even made any new music (or not that I know of anyways).

Here’s what they say, “Our estimates are based on total earnings from May 2011 to May 2012—the amount of money an act makes from record sales, touring, endorsements, merchandise sales and other ventures before subtracting management fees, legal costs and taxes (which can gobble up the bulk of a big payday). The totals were compiled with the help of data from Pollstar, RIAA and others, as well as interviews with industry insiders including concert promoters, lawyers, managers, agents and, in some cases, the musicians themselves.”
