‘Venom 2’ Trailer Has ‘Avengers’ And ‘Spider-Man’ References

It’s an exciting time for Venom fans, particularly because the first trailer for the upcoming sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage has finally been released. The footage promises an interesting expansion of the first film which will include one of Venom’s most notable enemies, the vicious symbiote named Carnage. Interestingly, the new trailer for the Venom sequel also contains a few references to both The Avengers and even Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy.

As you can see down below, one moment of the trailer actually includes Daily Bugle newspapers in the same format and style as they were shown in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. If that wasn’t enough, one of the newspapers in the same clip from the Venom 2 trailer also references Marvel’s The Avengers. It seems they hit two birds with one stone in that regard, and it’s only a small glimpse at what will likely be a movie full of Easter eggs and references.

It looks like Sony is making more of an effort to tie their Venom franchise with both the Spider-Man series but also Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. While things are likely still going to be relatively subtle in this new film, director Andy Serkis did mention there are going to be more Easter eggs referencing other continuities in this entry. Here’s what he specifically said via MovieWeb:

“Obviously, there are links between Venom and Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe and the Spider-Man story, but in this, we’re treating this very much as it’s his own world, the Venom story is his own world,” Serkis said. “There are nods and little moments just like this, the newspaper Daily Bugle, of course, but on the whole, he’s unaware, they’re unaware, at this point of other characters like Spider-Man. So that’s the way we’ve chosen to play this particular episode of the movie but well we’ll wait and see what little things you can pick out of it.”

Andy Serkis directed Venom: Let There Be Carnage from a script written by Kelly Marcel based on a story she wrote with Tom Hardy. Tom Hardy will once again reprise his role as Eddie Brock aka Venom, while Woody Harrelson will appear as Cletus Kasady aka Carnage. The cast also includes Michelle Williams,, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, and Stephen Graham.

The upcoming sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage is currently scheduled to hit theaters later this year on September 24.
